CSStipendRankings: Computer Science PhD Stipend Rankings

CSStipendRankings is a stipend-based ranking of top-paying computer science departments in US. We may implement support for other countries and you are welcomed to contribute! For a real academic ranking, please refer to CSRankings. For reviewing individual PhD advisors, please refer to PI Review.

Stipend, fees, and living cost are what we rank by. Full definitions are on the data & methodology page; the short version:

  • Stipend — the minimal pre-tax allowance granted by the institution to its PhD students. We display the stipend received by the majority of students, the minimal guaranteed stipend, and the semester-only stipend. Note that some departments do not have guaranteed summer funding, and this data is not yet complete.
  • Fees — annual non-reimbursible tariffs (including health insurance) reclaimed by the institution; the maximum possible fee, including any CPT or summer enrollment fee for international students. See why health insurance is included.
  • Living cost — the EPI Family Budget Calculator estimate (1 adult, 0 children) for the institution's county. See how we compute it.

This ranking is part informational and part satire, designed to democratize information on how PhD students in computer science and related areas are paid for their labor – inadequately, in most cases.
